The Bulgarian and Romanian sections have celebrated spring.

Martenitsa

On 1 March, Bulgarians celebrate the beginning of spring. According to tradition, on this day, everyone wears and exchanges “martenitsas”. It is made of red and white woollen threads knotted together. The martenitsa is a symbol of health, happiness, joy and success. Once again this year, pupils from the Bulgarian section (in primary) organised a martenitsa-making workshop with their peers from the Italian and Romanian sections. They also discovered the legend of the martenista, made spring cards with the help of their teachers and sang songs on the theme of spring. We would like to thank the teachers involved in this project.

Mărțișor

On 1 March, Romanians also celebrate the arrival of spring. They create “mărțișoare”, a small brooch with a red and white thread. They give them to those around them as a sign of love and appreciation, so that those who wear them will have good luck and good health. Last week, pupils from the Romanian section (in primary) worked with classes from other sections, sharing this tradition with them. The pupils were divided into three groups who visited three P5 classes. They talked about the mărțișor tradition, presented legends, played interactive games and guided their peers in crafting a mărțișor. Thank you to the pupils and teachers for their hard work and cooperation.
