Medical Service

Nurses are present during the day to care for sick and/or injured pupils.

The infirmary :

  • Is equipped to carry out a physical examination and to give first aid;
  • Has medicines for frequent use such as analgesics, antipyretics, anti-inflammatories and some more specific ones;
  • Contacts parents in case of severe health problems or accidents;
  • Is not equipped to keep pupils for long periods of time;
  • Does not treat injuries that have occurred outside the school.

Parents are asked to treat all minor ailments of daily life at home and/or with their doctor: sore throat, wart, etc.

In the interests of public health, parents are reminded that it is preferable for pupils not to be at school in case of fever or general discomfort.

It is essential that parents regularly update their contact information (telephone number, e-mail addresses, contact person, etc.) and remain reachable.

Please contact the medical service if you have any questions regarding your child’s care.

Outside the opening hours of the infirmary, a letterbox is available. You can also contact the medical service by e-mail (see below).

IMPORTANT

Before any new enrolment, parents must carefully complete the medical-educational questionnaire and the document “Authorization to administer a preventive treatment against meningococcal meningitis” and send them to the infirmary (documents available below).

If a pupil’s medical situation changes, parents undertake to inform the infirmary.

More information

This document is very important. When enrolling a new pupil, parents undertake to complete and send the medical-pedagogical questionnaire to the infirmary.

If a pupil’s medical situation changes, the parents undertake to inform the infirmary as well.

The infirmary has a medical file for each pupil. It contains :

  • The medical-pedagogical questionnaire that each parent undertakes to complete and send to the infirmary when their child first enrolls at EEB4 ;
    • If the medical situation of a pupil changes, parents undertake to inform the infirmary;
  • The document “Authorization to administer a preventive treatment against meningococcal meningitis“;
  • Reports of medical check-ups;
  • A summary sheet of the nursing care given to the pupil throughout his/her schooling;
  • Any important information about the pupil’s health in order to take the best possible care of him/her in case of an incident.

Les parents qui souhaitent rencontrer le médecin scolaire sont invités à prendre rendez-vous en téléphonant à l’infirmerie

As part of the school medical service, pupils in the following classes have a medical check-up during the school year:

  • Pupils in M2 (last year of nursery school)
  • Pupils in P1, P3 and P5
  • Pupils in S2, S4 and S6

The aim is to ensure medical follow-up of the pupils by organising individual health checks, to inform parents and to offer, if necessary, assistance likely to favour a better adaptation to school life.

The action of the medical service is exclusively preventive and aims at the early detection of physical deficiencies and the optimisation of living conditions.

Parents who wish to meet the school doctor are invited to make an appointment by phoning the infirmary

In accordance with Article 30 paragraph d) v. of the General Rules of the European Schools (ref. 2014-03-D-14-en-12) concerning absences due to contagious disease:

Where a pupil contracts an infectious disease, the pupil’s legal representatives must notify the Director in writing and adhere strictly to the rules laid down by the Administrative Board, drawn up in agreement with the school medical service, on the containment of infectious diseases, in particular as regards quarantine for him/her and other pupils living under the same roof. The pupil shall be readmitted to the school only on production of a medical certificate from a doctor recognised by the local health authorities or from the school doctor*.

The infirmary ensures the prophylaxis of transmissible diseases to avoid their spread in the school environment.

In the event of a contagious disease (including pediculosis), please inform the Director in writing as well as the nurses.

Some communicable diseases require specific measures to be taken in the event of an outbreak. Following a report, the medical service (school nurses and doctors) will decide which measures should be put in place.

Lice spread very quickly, especially at school because pupils are in close contact with each other. It is important that we work together to contain this problem. If lice are reported in your child’s classroom, you will be informed by the infirmary. In this case, here is what to do.

What to do

  1. Examine all members of your family as soon as possible
    • Lice can be quite difficult to spot because they are very small and move very quickly;
    • The best way to do this is to use a fine-toothed comb;
  2. Wash the hair and work in zones
    • Remove excess water with a towel, then divide the still wet hair into several sections;
    • Work one zone at a time;
    • Place the teeth of the comb at an angle as close to the scalp as possible and gently comb through the hair to the ends;
    • With each pass, wipe the comb on a tissue to better see if there are lice
  3. Repeat until you have checked the whole hair, or until you have found a louse.

If you have found lice

  1. Buy a lice treatment as soon as possible;
  2. Treat all infested family members on the same day, following the product instructions carefully;
    • Some lice treatments need to be used more than once, as they kill the lice but not necessarily the nits. Read the product instructions and apply the second treatment at the appropriate time.
  3. Change sheets and clothes and wash them at 60°C ;
  4. Disinfect with a special environmental treatment anything that cannot be washed (brushes, combs, chairs, helmets, cloth or stuffed toys) and that has been in contact with infected people;
  5. Inform all people who have been in close contact with your children and/or the infected persons during the last two weeks;

You did not find any lice

To control head lice infestations, regular examinations are necessary. Try to do this every week.

To avoid infestations

  • Tie up long hair;
  • Recommend that your children do not exchange clothes (hats, scarves, coats), brushes or combs with their friends
  • Have your children wear a bathing cap at the swimming pool

If you detect head lice, it is important to treat the infestation as soon as possible to stop their spread.

Accidents on the way to and from school or on the school premises which require medical advice and treatment are reported to the school insurance company “AIG”.

In the event of an accident, a school insurance document is sent to the parents by the infirmary, either in paper form via the pupil concerned, or in digital form by e-mail.

The parents must then :

  • Have it completed by the doctor who made the first report;
  • Send it as soon as possible to claims.be@aig.com (address also mentioned on the document);
  • Wait to be contacted by the insurance company after sending the document.
