Diplomacy Models

A Model is a political role-playing activity in which pupils and students act as delegates and represent a member state in an international organisation (United Nations, European Union, NATO, etc.) They join committees where current and historical issues are debated.

Why apply for such event?

Participation in a Model can help you gain or develop several skills that you can put on your CV (curriculum vitae) since such an event requires substantial research, drafting of policy proposals, critical thinking, teamwork, deliberation, negotiation, conflict resolution, and leadership skills.

During the conference, you will look at issues from multiple points of view, listen actively, show empathy, resolve conflicts and learn to take effective notes, thus growing in confidence, developing persuasive skills and your ability to show grace under pressure. You also learn a lot about current affairs in a fun way and make many new friends from other schools.

A key benefit of taking part in a model is that it provides you with opportunities to practice your public speaking skills throughout the conference.

Club

At EEB4, S5, S6 and S7 pupils can join the MUN Club.

Pupils do not need to be members of the club to apply to Models. Student-members of the club are not obliged to apply and attend such events if they do not wish to.

LAEMUN

Laeken Model United Nations or LAEMUN is an annual and internal Model-event that is organized by students and teachers at EEB4. It is usually held in the month of March or April. Delegates can be part of one of three committees (such as the World Health Organization, Security Council, and the Human Rights Committee).

Participation as delegates/country representatives is open to S5, S6, and S7 students, and participation as administrative staff members (volunteer organizers) is possible for S4s and S5s. Everyone can sign up for the Impromptu Speaking Contest, which is a side activity at LAEMUN.

Models in which we participate

MUNUccle (EEB1)

An MUN organized by EEB1. While this event is largely in French, there are usually committees in English. This event takes place in the first week of October.

EMUN Brussels

EMUN Brussels is an event that is organized by the association European People. It is held in February, in Brussels (the conference may coincide with the Carnival break). Chosen delegates need to pay a participation fee to the organizers (not to EEB4).

Model European Council

The Model European Council (MEC) program was created in 1984. It is an activity which brings together all of the European Schools for a role play simulation of a European Council summit. Each school sends one or two teams, each representing a member-state of the EU. A team of students representing the European Commission prepares the proposals before the summit – the themes on the agenda are always issues the EU is currently working on. The teams take on the roles of ministers and heads of state then debate these proposals and decide upon them. Additionally, there are three press teams who accompany and comment on the event, interview and question ministers and publish their article as a newspaper.

MEC takes place in March and is organized on a rotation basis by one of the European Schools. It takes place in the city of the organising school.
