CELI

EEB4 is an official CELI (Certificate of Italian Language) examination centre.

Our school has signed an agreement with the Università per Stranieri di Perugia (University for Foreigners of Perugia) in Italy. It aims at encouraging pupils and adults to prepare and take the examination to obtain the Certificate of Italian Language (CELI).

In September 2019, the European School of Brussels IV (Laeken) has received the honour of becoming an official CELI (Certificate of Italian Language) examination centre. The agreement signed between the EEB IV and the Università per Stranieri di Perugia (University for Foreigners of Perugia) in Italy, aims at encouraging pupils and adults to prepare and take the examination to obtain the Certificate of Italian Language (CELI).

The University for Foreigners of Perugia is one of the founding members of the European association ALTE (Association of Language Testers in Europe). It is the only one representing the Italian language in ALTE. In Belgium, the European School of Brussels IVLaeken is the only school authorised to issue CELI language certifications.

CELI language certifications are recognised by the Italian Ministry of Education (MIUR) and by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAECI). They are issued by the CVCL (Centro di Valutazione e Certificazione Linguistica) of the University for Foreigners of Perugia.

CELI certificates are organised according to the six levels for which the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) describes competences in language.

CELI certificates are then organised in subcategories depending on the different type of specific use: CELI standard certificates are addressed to both adults and teenagers, while CELI adolescenti certificates are reserved to adolescents aged between 12 and 18 years old.

  • CELI Impatto (A1 level): certifies the knowledge of the Italian language at level A1 of the CEFR;
  • CELI 1 (A2 level): certifies the knowledge of the Italian language at level A2 of the CEFR;
  • CELI 2 (B1 level): certifies the knowledge of the Italian language at level B1 of the CEFR;
  • CELI 3 (B2 level): certifies the knowledge of the Italian language at level B2 of the CEFR;
  • CELI 4 (C1 level): certifies the knowledge of the Italian language at level C1 of the CEFR;
  • CELI 5 (C2 level): certifies the knowledge of the Italian language at level C2 of the CEFR.

Three exam sessions are foreseen during the year: in March (exclusively for CELI Impatto, CELI 1, CELI 2 and CELI 3), in June and in November.

CELI adolescenti (CELI a) are certifications of the Italian language reserved for teenagers aged between 12 and 18 years old. They evaluate the ability to use the language in communication activities typical of this age range. CELI examinations are designed in accordance with the learning objectives set by the CEFR levels.

CELI a exams take place only once a year (in May) and are divided into three levels:

  • CELI 1 a (A2): Certifies the knowledge of the Italian language at level A2 of the CECR;
  • CELI 2 a (B1): Certifies the knowledge of the Italian language at level B1 of the CECR;
  • CELI 3 a (B2): Certifies the knowledge of the Italian language at level B2 of the CECR.

  • Certification is necessary for those who wish to apply at university in Italy. The Italian Ministry of Education (MIUR) recognises CELI 3 (level B2) as a valid certificate to prove the knowledge of the Italian language required to register at university in Italy, in accordance with the entry rules established for foreign students by each university;
  • The CELI 5 (level C2) is also recognised as a valid certification for the knowledge of the Italian language required for enrolment in the lists for teaching in Italian schools at all levels;
  • It is essential for those who wish to obtain a long-term residence permit (CELI 1 or CELI 1 Immigrant);
  • CELI is a remarkable tool to enter the Italian labour market;
  • It is also a good way to assess personal progress in learning Italian at the end of a course cycle.

The Italian system distinguishes four types of certificates issued by the following universities and international organisations:

  • CELI: Universy for Foreigners of Perugia;
  • CILS: Unviersity of Sienna;
  • PLIDA: Dante Alighieri;
  • IT: University of Rome 3.

They are all part of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) and despite their different levels of requirements are rather similar.
The main difference is that only CELI certifications are part of ALTE. This requires very high standards. All CELI exams are constantly monitored to ensure consistency of formulas and tests.

Registration fees for CELI exams are set by the University for Foreigners of Perugia to 120.00€. It is necessary to add about 16.00€ for the shipment of the certificate to the recipient (mandatory stamp duty).
